Everyday Words for Everyday Conversations: Spelling and Speaking Essentials

Course Overview

This 4-week course focuses on teaching adult ESL learners at the B1/B2 level how to spell and use common everyday words in English. Each week introduces 10 high-frequency words used in daily conversations. The course emphasizes spelling, pronunciation, and contextual usage through interactive and engaging activities.

Week 1: Foundations of Listening, Spelling, and Conversation for Everyday English

This ESL class is designed for B1/B2 learners who want to enhance their listening, spelling, dictation, and conversation skills. The session focuses on practical vocabulary and interactive activities to build confidence in understanding and using English in daily life. With a list of 10 common words, learners will practice pronunciation, spelling, and conversational application while improving their listening comprehension.

Week 2: Practical Words for Daily Routines

Ready to talk about your daily life?  Want to talk about it? This class will emphasize minimal pairs as well as how to pronounce and determine which word is being used.  Do you walk to work?  Wel, we will talk about it and write about it.  Come on, it will be fun! Who doesn’t like to talk and write about what they do?

Week 3: Words for Social Interactions

We will build on the previous lessons and keep improving.  We will continue to build your confidence so you feel comfortable using your English in social situations.

The focus will be pronunciation practice with : Stress and intonation practice with words like “laugh” (/læf/).

Build your spelling skills with Spelling Activities and games.

Week 4: Words for Common Situations

This ESL class is designed for B1/ B2-level learners who want to improve their spoken English by mastering voiced and unvoiced consonant pairs. Through interactive activities, learners will build confidence in pronouncing medium-difficulty words commonly used in everyday situations. The session will also focus on using these words in context, enhancing both spoken and written communication skills.

Pronunciation Practice: Focus on voiced/unvoiced pairs (e.g., buy/pay).

Spelling Activity: Fill-in-the-blank exercises with the words
